Preparing for Loan

What to Wear to a Business Loan Interview

Have you ever thought about what to wear for a loan interview? If you haven't, maybe you should be thinking about it.  To put it in a proper perspective,  when you interview for a new job, you always want to give your best first impression, and the loan interview is no less important.  Whether it's fair or not, we always seem to draw at least some conclusions when we meet someone for the first time.  It is better to error on the side of caution when you are trying to borrow someone else's money.

There is not a lot of information floating out there about what lenders prefer to see loan applicants wearing for an interview, but fortunately, some of the basic interviewing wardrobe guidelines apply to formal meeting occasions such as this.

There is a lot of preparation involved in the loan process, and this is no time to overlook the value and benefit of being dressed properly for the occasion.  Try these useful do and don't suggestions.

Don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself with loud or obnoxious clothing colors or styles.  Don't wear distracting outfits that don't provide enough coverage.  If it's true that your outfit says something about you, then let it say you are smart and well put together.  Men should avoid "silly" ties or shirts with logos or distracting images.  Women should avoid "deep V" style shirts, sequined shirts, large jewelry pieces, large tote bags, and stiletto style shoes.

Do wear a conservative suit if you have one (men and women), or a crisp clean button down shirt with nice slacks.  Women can also wear a blouse or quality knit sweater.  Shoes should be cleaned and shined (that one is for the men), and women should wear a medium heel or flat dress shoe.  If you have time, have someone give you a quick inspection, and run a lint roller over your outfit if necessary.  It never hurts to get a second opinion on your outfit.

Ultimately, when you apply for a loan, the decision will come down to multiple factors, and some of them will be out of your control.  The way you dress and present yourself will send a non-verbal message on your behalf, so let that message speak well of you.
